Course overview

Hybrid Project Management in Malaysia

In project management one of the most important developments in recent years is the emergence of Agile frameworks in product development. The primary reason for this is the need for consistent delivery of high priority requests.Scrum is the most wide-spread practice in Agile project management. This methodology uses short time-boxes (work confined in regular, repeatable work cycle) like a sprint (or iteration) in Scrum to allow customers to have a tangible and objective view of a product’s progress. This way of working is becoming increasingly popular and are being used in other areas. But the fundamental of project management that uses the pillars from Waterfall/Traditional approach are still important in ensuring a successful project. In this three day class students learn to apply generic Waterfall project approach and Professional Scrum. They experience old traditional project approach and new, agile ways of working that enable teams to deliver more value, satisfy stakeholders and work better together.Students work together as a team in a series of Sprints to solve complex problems, facing similar challenges that they face outside of class and learning how to use Scrum to address them. These Sprints enable students to see the practical application of Scrum and to understand the value of an Agile mindset.Additionally, these Sprints expose common missteps and misunderstandings often seen while using Scrum, allowing students to develop an awareness of the associated symptoms and how to correct them. Students not only learn Scrum; they learn how to use Scrum well.

General

What is Hybrid Project Management?

Hybrid Project Management combines traditional (Waterfall) and Agile methodologies to provide a balanced approach, leveraging the strengths of both to better suit a project’s specific needs.

Why might a team choose a Hybrid approach?

Teams choose Hybrid for flexibility in managing mixed requirements, transitioning from traditional to Agile, handling complex projects with varying phases, or meeting specific stakeholder expectations.

How do you determine which parts of a project should be Agile or Waterfall?

It often depends on project requirements, deliverables, and stakeholder needs. For example, initial planning might be Waterfall, while iterative development and testing could be Agile.

Are there specific tools designed for Hybrid Project Management?

Many project management tools support both methodologies. While not exclusive to Hybrid, tools like Jira, Microsoft Project, and Trello can be customized to track both Waterfall milestones and Agile sprints.

How does communication work in a Hybrid model?

Open and clear communication is vital. Regular meetings, aligned with both Waterfall and Agile practices, ensure everyone understands the methodologies in use and project progress.

What are the challenges in implementing Hybrid Project Management?

Challenges include aligning different mindsets, avoiding overcomplication, ensuring clarity in processes, and balancing stakeholder expectations with project flexibility.

Can you switch to a Hybrid model midway through a project?

Yes, but it requires careful assessment of project status, alignment of team members, and clear communication to stakeholders about the change and its benefits.

How does Hybrid Project Management impact project timelines?

Hybrid can offer faster delivery of critical features through Agile sprints, while maintaining structured milestones from Waterfall. However, the impact varies based on how the methodologies are integrated.

How do you handle stakeholder expectations in a Hybrid model?

Regular updates, clear documentation, and setting clear expectations from the start are key. Stakeholders should understand the benefits of the Hybrid approach and how it impacts deliverables.

Is Hybrid Project Management a temporary solution for teams transitioning to Agile?

Not necessarily. While some teams use Hybrid as a stepping stone to full Agile adoption, others find it consistently beneficial due to its adaptability to various project needs.
